Pachycereus marginatus, commonly known as Mexican Fence Post Cactus, is a tall, columnar cactus admired for its clean vertical lines and architectural form. Native to Mexico, this slow to moderate growing cactus features deep green stems with evenly spaced ribs lined with short spines. It is popular in modern desert landscapes and container collections due to its structured, upright growth.

Light Requirements

Thrives in full sun to very bright light.

Indoors: Place in the brightest location available, ideally a south or west facing window.

Outdoors: Prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade in extremely hot climates.

Insufficient light can lead to stretching and weaker growth.

Watering

Follow a soak-and-dry watering method.

Water thoroughly only when soil is completely dry.

Reduce watering significantly during winter dormancy.

This cactus is highly drought tolerant and sensitive to overwatering.

Soil

Requires fast-draining cactus or succulent soil.

Adding pumice, gravel, or perlite helps prevent root rot and improves drainage.

Temperature and Humidity

Prefers temperatures between 65–90°F.

Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 40°F.

Thrives in low humidity and well-ventilated environments.

Fertilizer

Feed lightly during spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertilizer.

Avoid fertilizing during fall and winter.

Growth and Maintenance

This cactus grows upright and may eventually form multiple columns from the base.

Growth is generally slow in containers but faster when planted outdoors in warm climates.

Handle carefully, as spines can be sharp.

Propagation

Commonly propagated through stem cuttings.

Allow cut surfaces to callous for several days before planting in dry cactus soil.

Roots typically develop over several weeks with proper warmth and light.

Pet Safety

Non-toxic to pets, but sharp spines can cause physical injury. Placement in a safe location is recommended.
