Epiphyllum 'Ric Rac' Cactus
Epiphyllum 'Ric Rac' Cactus
Cryptocereus anthonyanus, commonly known as the Ric Rac Cactus or Fishbone Cactus, is a distinctive epiphytic cactus prized for its long, flat, zigzag-shaped stems that cascade gracefully from containers. Its dramatic, sculptural form makes it a standout in hanging baskets and elevated planters. When mature and grown in ideal conditions, it may produce large, fragrant, pale pink to white flowers that open at night, adding to its appeal.
Native to tropical forests, the Ric Rac Cactus differs from desert cacti in its preference for brighter indirect light and slightly more frequent watering. Its unique texture and easygoing nature make it a favorite among both collectors and casual plant enthusiasts.
Care:
Light: Bright, indirect light. Tolerates some gentle morning sun; avoid harsh direct sunlight.
Water: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Do not allow soil to remain soggy.
Humidity: Enjoys higher humidity than desert cacti but adapts well to average indoor levels.
Temperature: Prefers 60–85°F. Protect from cold temperatures below 50°F.
Soil: Well-draining cactus or epiphytic mix with added organic matter.
Maintenance: Minimal. Trim stems as needed to control length or shape.
Pet Safety:
Cryptocereus anthonyanus is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
With its bold zigzag form and cascading growth, the Ric Rac Cactus is an eye-catching, low-maintenance plant that brings texture and character to any indoor plant collection.
