Alocasia sulawesi — “Alocasia Jacklyn”

A rare, deeply textured Alocasia with striking chartreuse and dark green contrast

Alocasia sulawesi, widely known as Alocasia “Jacklyn,” is a highly sought-after species prized for its dramatic, prehistoric-style foliage. Its leaves feature bold, elongated lobes, intense dark green veining, and a unique chartreuse base that gives the entire plant a vibrant, almost electric look. Each leaf has a distinctive, deeply textured surface that makes this species feel both wild and sculptural, appealing to collectors who prefer unusual and statement-making tropical plants.

This species originates from Sulawesi, Indonesia, and brings that jungle character indoors with its intricate structure and bold coloration.

Appearance

  • Botanical Name: Alocasia sulawesi
  • Common Name: Alocasia “Jacklyn”
  • Leaf Structure: Deeply lobed, almost antler-like, with strong angles and dramatic points
  • Color: Bright chartreuse base with dark, nearly black veining
  • Texture: Rough, reptile-like leaf texture, especially pronounced on mature foliage
  • Growth Habit: Upright, open, and architectural
  • Size: Typically reaches 2–3 ft indoors under ideal conditions

Care Requirements

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light. It can handle medium light but may lose some vibrancy. Avoid direct afternoon sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaf tissue.

Water

Maintain lightly but consistently moist soil. Water when the top inch begins to dry. Never allow it to stay soggy; proper drainage is essential for healthy rhizome and root development.

Humidity

Thrives in 60–80 percent humidity. Higher humidity promotes larger, better-shaped leaves and prevents leaf edge crisping.

Temperature

Ideal range is 70–85°F. Keep away from drafts, cold windows, and sudden temperature changes. Avoid letting temperatures fall below 60°F.

Soil

Use a loose, chunky, and fast-draining mix such as:

  • Aroid mix
  • Potting soil with perlite and orchid bark
  • Coco coir blended with airy substrates

Fertilizer

Fertilize during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer every four weeks. Reduce feeding during winter.

Growth Notes

Alocasia “Jacklyn” may slow its growth or drop a leaf during cooler months. This is normal dormancy behavior. Warmth, humidity, and steady watering will support new growth in the active season.

Some plants may produce occasional variegation or lighter mottling depending on light levels and genetics.

Pet Safety

Toxic to pets if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals, like most Alocasias. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
