Alocasia rugosa — “Alocasia Melo”
A rare, ultra-textured tropical plant with thick, stone-like foliage
Alocasia rugosa, commonly known as Alocasia “Melo,” is one of the most distinctive and highly textured species in the Alocasia family. Its leaves are incredibly thick, almost succulent-like, with a hard, leathery surface that closely resembles carved stone or reptile skin. Deeply etched veins create dramatic ridges across each leaf, giving the plant a rugged, architectural appearance unlike any other tropical houseplant.
Compact, slow-growing, and visually striking, Alocasia Melo makes a stunning statement piece for collectors who appreciate unusual foliage and sculptural form.
Appearance
• Botanical Name: Alocasia rugosa
• Common Name: Alocasia “Melo”
• Leaf Texture: Extremely thick and stiff; one of the firmest leaf surfaces among Alocasias
• Color: Blue-green to slate gray with deep-set, darkened veining
• Shape: Broad, oval leaves with heavy ridges and a three-dimensional, stone-like look
• Growth Habit: Compact, low, and dense
• Mature Size: Typically 12–18 inches tall indoors
Its coarse texture and cool-toned coloration give it a prehistoric, stone-carved aesthetic that stands out in any collection.
Care Requirements
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate medium light but will grow more slowly. Avoid direct harsh sunlight, which may scorch the thick leaves.
Water
Keep the soil evenly and lightly moist. Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil begin to dry. Avoid overwatering, as the thick, slow-growing rhizomes are sensitive to rot.
Humidity
Thrives in moderate to high humidity, preferably 60 percent or higher. Consistent humidity helps maintain leaf firmness and shape.
Temperature
Ideal temperature range is 70–85°F. Protect from cold drafts and avoid letting it drop below 60°F.
Soil
Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix such as:
• Potting soil with added perlite
• Orchid bark blended with coco coir
• Any mix designed for aroids that maintains airflow around the roots
Fertilizer
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted balanced fertilizer. Withhold or reduce feeding in winter when growth naturally slows.
Growth Notes
Alocasia Melo is a naturally slow-growing species. New leaves emerge thick and firm, maintaining their sculptural texture as they mature. It may drop a leaf or pause growth during cooler seasons, which is normal.
Pet Safety
Toxic to pets if ingested. Like other Alocasias, it contains calcium oxalate crystals. Keep out of reach of animals and children.
