4” Mammillaria bocasana f. monstruosa cv. Fred
This rare and visually striking cactus is a monstrose form of the classic Mammillaria bocasana. Instead of the typical symmetrical, globular shape, it grows in irregular, contorted clusters, giving it a sculptural, almost abstract appearance. Its body is densely covered with soft, white, hair-like spines, often tipped with golden or brown areoles, creating a fluffy, powder-puff effect. Small, delicate pink flowers may appear in summer, usually at the crown of the stems, adding a gentle pop of color.
Size:
Typically remains small, around 6–12 cm (2–5 in) in height and slightly wider, making it perfect for tabletop displays or succulent collections.
Light:
Bright, indirect sunlight is ideal. Can tolerate some direct sun but may scorch if exposed to harsh midday rays.
Watering:
Drought-tolerant; allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Water sparingly in winter. Overwatering can cause rot.
Soil:
Well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Adding perlite or pumice improves drainage.
Temperature:
Prefers warm, dry conditions. Protect from frost; best kept above 50°F (10°C).
Propagation:
Usually propagated by offsets (pups) or stem cuttings. Seeds are possible but slow-growing.
Pet Safety:
Generally non-toxic but spines are sharp, so handle with care around pets and children.
Fun Fact:
Monstrose cacti like this one are prized for their unusual, sculptural forms and are considered collector’s items among cactus enthusiasts.
